Lee Daniels<\/strong>, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker who has directed four distinctly different sorts of feature films over the last nine years, will receive the Hollywood Director Award for his helming of\u00a0Lee Daniels’ The Butler<\/em>\u00a0at the\u00a017th\u00a0annual Hollywood Film Awards — the first awards show of the 2013 season — on Oct. 21 at the Beverly Hilton, \u00a0The Hollywood Reporter\u00a0has learned. (The Hollywood Film Awards is owned by affiliates of\u00a0THR<\/em>\u00a0parent company Guggenheim Partners.)<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Film Awards are determined by founder and executive director\u00a0Carlos deAbreu<\/strong>\u00a0and an advisory committee. De\u00a0Abreu\u00a0tells\u00a0THR<\/em>, “It’s a great honor for us to recognize Lee’s outstanding work with our top directing honor of the year. His tremendous vision and versatility provides us with films that are both critical and box office successes.” \u00a0Daniels, 53, worked in the health care profession and as a talent agent before becoming a filmmaker himself. He served as a producer on the films\u00a0Monster’s Ball<\/em>\u00a0(2001), for which\u00a0Halle Berry\u00a0<\/strong>became the first black best actress Oscar winner, andThe Woodsman<\/em>\u00a0(2004), which played at Sundance and Cannes. Then he stepped behind the camera himself, directing the critically dismissed\u00a0Shadowboxer<\/em>\u00a0(2005) and then the widely acclaimed\u00a0Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire<\/em>(2009), which was nominated for six Oscars, including best picture and best director. Last year, he wrote and directed\u00a0The Paperboy<\/em>, which divided people as much as any of his films but still garnered best actress Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations for\u00a0Nicole Kidman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On Aug. 16, The Weinstein Co. released the film that has proven to be Daniels’ biggest commercial success yet:\u00a0Lee Daniels’ The Butler<\/em>\u00a0— a dramatic biopic inspired by the life of a black man who served as a White House butler to numerous\u00a0U.S. presidents as the Civil Rights movement gained steam outside the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue — which is still playing in more than 2,000 theaters. The tearjerker, which stars\u00a0Forest Whitaker\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Oprah Winfrey<\/strong>, among many other big names, received strong reviews and has grossed nearly $111 million domestically, thus far.<\/p>\n

Previous recipients of the Hollywood Director Award include\u00a0Norman Jewison<\/strong>\u00a0(1998),John Schlesinger<\/strong>\u00a0(1999),\u00a0Richard Donner<\/strong>\u00a0(2000),\u00a0John Frankenheimer<\/strong>\u00a0(2001),Martin Scorsese<\/strong>\u00a0(2002),\u00a0Ron Howard<\/strong>\u00a0(2003),\u00a0Michael Mann<\/strong>\u00a0(2004),\u00a0Sam Mendes<\/strong>\u00a0(2005),\u00a0Oliver Stone<\/strong>\u00a0(2006),\u00a0Marc Forster<\/strong>\u00a0(2007),\u00a0Clint Eastwood<\/strong>\u00a0(2008),Kathryn Bigelow<\/strong>\u00a0(2009),\u00a0Tom Hooper<\/strong>\u00a0(2010),\u00a0Bennett Miller<\/strong>\u00a0(2011) and\u00a0David O. Russell<\/strong>\u00a0(2012). Just months after collecting their Hollywood Film Festival Award, Bigelow and Hooper went on to win the best director Oscar, while Scorsese and Russell received nominations.<\/p>\n
