{"id":608,"date":"2011-07-30T03:48:25","date_gmt":"2011-07-30T03:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kevindkinsey.com\/?p=608"},"modified":"2011-07-30T03:48:25","modified_gmt":"2011-07-30T03:48:25","slug":"the-mahalia-jackson-biopic-starring-fantasia-barrino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kevindkinsey.com\/?p=608","title":{"rendered":"The Mahalia Jackson Biopic Starring Fantasia Barrino"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.blogs.indiewire.com\/images\/blogs\/shadowandact\/archives\/mahalia-fantasia-gospelconn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well, it wasn\u2019t too long ago that we informed you about gospel legend\u00a0<strong>Mahalia Jackson<\/strong>\u2018s biopic in the works.\u00a0 Based on the book\u00a0<em>Got To Tell It: Mahalia Jackson, Queen of Gospel<\/em>, the screenplay is being written by\u00a0<strong>Jim Evering<\/strong> and the film will star singer\u00a0<strong>Fantasia Barrino<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sitting in the director\u2019s chair is\u00a0<strong>Euzhan Palcy<\/strong> (<strong><em>Sugar Cane Alley<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><em>A Dry White Season<\/em><\/strong>).\u00a0 Thanks to S&amp;A reader Cordell, here\u2019s some updates on the project.<\/p>\n<p>According to Adrian Taylor, executive producer of the project, the film will primarily be shot in New Orleans and Chicago.\u00a0 Also, the producers are in talks with\u00a0<strong>Diahann Carroll<\/strong> and<strong>Michael Clark Duncan<\/strong>\u2014among others\u2014to possibly play roles.<\/p>\n<p>A big element in the marketing scheme will be courting the Christian audience although they feel Mahalia\u2019s story will appeal to many easily.\u00a0 \u201c<strong><em>We\u2019re using the same business model for marketing as was used with \u2018The Passion of the Christ<\/em><\/strong>,\u2019\u201d Taylor said.<\/p>\n<p>Since Euzhan Palcy won\u2019t be available to shoot until October, the plan is to begin production in October and release the film in late 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The film has already received an invite to the\u00a0<strong>Cannes Film Festival<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u201c<strong><em>They\u2019ve offered for us to do a screening there<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d Taylor said. \u201c<strong><em>We can either enter it as competition, or we can have it in the non-competition and premiere it, if it\u2019s edited.
